A car driven by youngsters ran over six people sleeping on a pavement in Bandra early Sunday morning. The incident has once again brought to limelight the issue of youngsters increasingly driving recklessly, reports CNBC-TV18.
Six streetsmart youngsters, now hiding their faces in shame, returned drunk from a Saturday night-out, and mowed down 6 people sleeping on a footpath in Bandra.
In yet another incident of youth recklessness, in Gurgaon, youths racing with each other, to show off, almost killed 27 year-old Dilip Kumar, a guard, in May 2006. The worst part is that the drivers were all class 10 students.
The problem therefore, is not just drunk driving, but careless youth lacking supervision. Take for instance, a young 16-year-old who does not have a license, but loves to drive and the best part her parents don’t know.
She leaves for school in the morning with her driver and switches seats later. She says there is nothing wrong in what she does because she knows how to drive and there is always a driver beside her. She has no fear of being caught.
"I don’t think they will because I obey all traffic rules. They know I can drive, but dont know that I drive to school," said the teen driver.
Keeping yesterday’s Bandra incident in mind, there should be serious deterrents to under-age driving. One must realize that this is a team effort, involving not only the police, but parents and schools as well.
Is there a conrete solution in sight? Delhi, this year, has already seen close to 2000 challans against minor drivers, which just goes to show that in the metros, the incidents of negligent teen driving are on the rise. It’s high time that someone hit the brakes
