Gurgaon hit-and-run case victim dies

Saturday, December 2, 2006 (New Delhi):

Around 40 days after a Tata Safari reversed over him, Dr Amit Diwan from Gurgaon died on Friday morning in hospital.

Just 24 hours before Dr Diwan’s death, his father Balwant Rai Diwan spoke to NDTV at Ganga Ram Hospital.

For 40 days, he arrived at the ICU every morning to spend the day with his son.

"It is been an extremely tough time for the family. My only son who was on threshold of his career is now lying unconscious for no fault of his," said Balwant Rai Diwan, Dr Amit’s Father.

On Saturday, Balwant Rai Diwan was told that his son had succumbed to the colossal injuries he suffered in an accident that shocked Delhi.

Shocking incident

On October 18, Amit Diwan, a young doctor, was standing outside his house in Gurgaon’s Sector 10 when two men in a Tata Safari hit his car.

Amit warned them to drive carefully, and within seconds, the men reversed over Amit. He was dragged 150 m and then left by the roadside.

Police sources tell NDTV that there were two men in the car. The owner is a wealthy resident of Bahardurgarh in Haryana and is still missing.

The driver of the car, Jitendra, an out of work engineer who lived in Gurgaon’s Sector 10, was charged with reckless driving and is now out on bail.

But at his house, there’s no sign of him, and his relatives claim that they have no clue of his whereabouts.

After Dr Diwan’s death, the police now promise to take the investigation seriously and slap more serious charges than just negligent driving on the men involved, but given that a month has passed with little or no action, that is rather difficult to believe.
